Twenty children attended and spent Saturday and Sunday playing games, making wolf-related crafts, watching movies, learning a LOT about wolves and their behavior, and meeting some of the Wolf Park animals, including our four red foxes. They howled with Park Director Dr. Erich Klinghammer and his howling mouse -- er, chihuahua -- Cassie. The kids also got to stay overnight in our Education Center and had a cookout with hot dogs and s'mores!
The kids got to do a lot of things not offered to the general public. In some of the photos you can see the kids' seminar participants viewing our unique wolf-bison demonstration from inside the enclosure with the animals. (The humans stay safely in the truck!) Participants are treated to an up-close view of what really happens when predator meets prey -- most often, the predator "loses". The wolves didn't catch anything at this demonstration either, but it wasn't because they weren't trying. They put on a pretty good show (and so did the bison)! Later, the wolves were returned to their enclosure and were given food which they didn't have to catch. They liked that part. The foxes enjoyed meeting the seminar participants and getting treats from them, but it was unusually warm and the foxes were wearing fur coats -- so eventually they settled down for a nap. Basil, though, was very happy to let the kids scratch his ears while he snoozed (wasn't that nice of him?)....
