Wolves Versus Bison

Some people have asked why Wolf Park would let big, hungry wolves in with defenseless bison. I want to know why anyone would think bison are defenseless! Here is what usually happens when we get to meet the bison on Sunday -- they chase us away, really fast!

I really don't like the way that bison mom is looking at me.

I think it is time to go look for mice or something smaller!

As you can see from these photos, wolves are a lot smaller than bison. A large grey wolf may weigh 110 pounds, but a full grown bison may weigh 1800 pounds or more! Size is definitely in the bison's favor. Bison are in no real danger from wolves as long as they are healthy and stay with the herd.

Boy, am I glad I don't have to hunt bison to survive. Can you imagine how hard it must have been for the Native Americans to hunt and catch one of these big guys?

The wolves have it really good here at Wolf Park -- food is brought to us. When we hunt it is for smaller prey like mice, frogs, and snakes, and it is not to survive, but because we like to hunt.

Well, I think I hear that old blue truck coming with dinner, so until next time, this is MiskaMoo saying, "Watch out for that big bad pig! -- and look both ways."
