a.k.a. Miska, of Wolf Park's "Alpha Pack"

Hi there! MiskaMoo here.

For you new visitors to my site, my "real" name is Miska. I was born on April 9, 1996 (that means I will be ten years old soon!). I am one of six puppies born to Altair and Chinook that year.

For most of my life, I was the beta male, or #2 ranked male. For a little while in early June of 1998, I got to be alpha male for a while. I showed my brother, Seneca, my teeth and he backed down and let me be alpha male for a few months. Then he decided he wanted to be alpha again and so I let him. I like Seneca a lot, and he likes me too. It's nice to have a friend.

This has been a pretty good year. I have gotten to go on the wolf bison demo almost every Sunday. There we five young calves in the herd this year and my brother Seneca and I, as well as Marion, did lots of hunting. Hunting is a serious busines, and all us wolves mean business when we are hunting. Though we came close a few times, none of the bison or us wolves got hurt. I sure made them think twice though.

(Sometimes I hear the humans talking about how they've arranged things so we'll never, ever really catch a bison. I don't think that's fair, do you?)

My relatives in the wild have a very hard time surviving if the prey they hunt is bison. Bison are very big, and they don't run from predators. They stand and fight. Wolves try to find a weakness in the herd -- we look for an old, young, sick or injured bison, or one away from the protection of the herd. Unfortunately for us, bison stick together and even the babies are always protected by big, strong, healthy adults. I am glad I don't have to hunt bison to survive.

My pack mates and I have been moved around to different enclosures a lot. It is nice to move once in a while. We get new enclosures to investigate. I miss being in the main enclosure, though. I used to spend lots of time walking around the lake and did not have to be so close to Marion. She still bugs me at times, but not as much as she once did. In fact, sometimes she's almost kind of cute, but don't tell Seneca that. He'll get jealous!
